The Wheel at ICON Park will launch a new experience in early 2023

The Great Florida Road Trip combines fun and education to create the ultimate family experience

ORLANDO, Fla. (November 16, 2022) – An exciting and interactive upgrade is coming to The Wheel at ICON Park. Scheduled to launch in early 2023, “The Great Florida Road Trip, A Classic Vacation and Photo Travelogue with the Flamingo Family” will take visitors on a nostalgic vacation through Florida from the mid-century before the theme park era. and sprawling resorts.

The experience will be full of throwback imagery and retro tales reminding travelers that Florida was a family vacation destination long before international theme park conglomerates began bringing visitors to the state.

With a camera in hand, guests will join a fun cartoon family of flamingos on their vacation and help them capture snapshots of Florida vacation spots through a collection of billboards depicting classic destinations in across the state.

As guests ride The Wheel, they’ll discover a bygone side of Florida they may never have known. Whoever gets the highest score by taking the most quality targeted snapshots will receive a special prize to enhance their own Florida vacation, but each group will receive a special keepsake from their vacation with the Flamingo family! Guests will receive a retro-style postcard that they can fill out after the experience and drop in a themed mailbox for ICON Park to mail to them.

“I have always been intrigued and inspired by the role of Florida’s tourism pioneers – the roadside attractions and short-lived entertainment venues that paved the way for all that followed,” said Chris Jaskiewicz. , President and CEO of ICON Park. “This concept allows us to honor their contribution, while educating visitors about the diversity of experiences Florida has to offer. People of all ages can have fun playing the game, and I know there will be tons of smiles from guests who are old enough to reflect fondly on these destinations.

While this experience is deeply rooted in Sunshine State history, its technology is anything but vintage. ICON Park has invested in developing this experience with the help of highly reputable and talented partners. Orlando-based IDEAS, Knoxville-based Creative Amusements, and Lafayette, Indiana-based Steradian Technologies all contributed to the theme, styling, and product development required by the experience.

The collaboration resulted in a proprietary camera-themed gaming device that uses a traditional infrared system, which enables laser tag-like interactions up to 1,000 feet away. A critical factor in the success of this project was the development of a camera-like device that reinvents this whole experience for customers.

An example of this “reimagining” is the work done by Steradian Technologies, the developers of the X-Series laser tag which used RF control, microcontrollers and proprietary circuit boards.

For The Great Florida Road Trip, ICON Park needed to create a product that could be used over 300 meters away. The camera body and ergonomics have been designed by Steradian Technologies to allow the integration of these pre-existing technologies into this new application and the chimera targets, which were developed in 2015, have also been redeveloped.

ICON Park and its partners have also invested in ergonomics and design to ensure the device is lightweight and intuitive enough for passengers of all ages to play easily and everyone can have fun learning or remembering the feel of a photograph or analog experience. .

Along with this new experience aboard The Wheel, there’s a revamped queue, pre-show, and a mix of themed merchandise. It all serves to take guests back to what’s been called Florida’s golden age of tourism, a time when descriptive postcards expressed sentiments like “wish you were here” and billboards High impact signage on the side of the freeway begged us to visit and explore.

ICON Park is at the center of Orlando’s new entertainment district. With free parking and conveniently located near I-4, Universal Boulevard and the beach, this premier entertainment resort is easily accessible for any Central Florida resident or Orlando tourist.
