How do you describe your style?
Modest, feminine and assertive.
How does being a stay-at-home mom impact your style?
Being a busy mom leads me to gravitate towards more functional and effortless pieces on a daily basis, while still looking like they look together. Being comfortable and confident helps me feel ready to face the day.
Describe the outfit you recently wore that made you feel confident.
A flattering pair of skinny jeans, a ruffled sleeve sweater and suede ankle boots.
How has your style evolved over the years?
I would say my style has gone from a more trendy one to now focusing on classic bullion coins.
What are the current trends that you are prepared to see in retirement?
Super oversized coats, chunky heeled boots, and loaded patterned leggings are not my cup of tea.
What cultural influences are evident in your wardrobe?
I grew up a Muslim between two very different cultures – the Middle East and the West. This experience shaped my unique individual style. I choose to be visibly Muslim and wear modest clothing while being modern and daring. In my opinion, this is the best of both worlds!
What are the main articles that you search for most often?
Plain stockings, patterned tops and of course a matching hijab.
How does makeup and hair play a role in your style?
One of the perks of wearing the hijab is that you don’t have to worry about styling my hair before going out. However, I carefully select the color of the hijab that will complement my outfit. My makeup is influenced by the occasion, the outfit and the season. Everything has to come together to complete the look.
What do you think is worth splurging?
Investing in well-fitting, invisible underwear is essential, as it is the foundation on which an outfit is built. I also think a classic black pants and a flattering fit blazer are worth it because the options are endless.
Best buy you’ve ever made?
I have invested in clothes made with innovative recycled fabrics and washable and durable shoes / bags. Much of my current collection consists of plastic water bottles.
The most sentimental item you own?
I have some gold jewelry from Syria that my grandmother custom made for me when I was a child. I will always cherish them because they bring back heartwarming memories of my childhood in Damascus.
What are your fall must-haves?
A pair of well-fitting denim, high quality black leggings, a crisp white top, nude pumps and a pair of comfy flats.
What should every Minnesotan have in their wardrobe?
A timeless trench coat is perfect for the transition between seasons, and a pair of polarized sunglasses is invaluable during these bright winters.
Farewell advice / thoughts?
Whatever your style, wear what makes you feel better, empowered, and most importantly, happy.
