I preferred fashion to engineering – Rosy Alyn

Tell us about you?
I am a mother and a fashion entrepreneur.
Where does your passion for fashion come from?
I’m a software engineer but I like the style. Even then my mother was a seamstress and when she died I felt the need to carry on her legacy. I also wanted to be my own boss.
Did your late mother contribute to this career path?
Yes, I learned the basics from her, but I improved my skills and knowledge at Nilayi University in Malaysia.
How long have you been in fashion?
Since 2011 to date.
It’s been 10 years since you started doing this kind of business. What have you achieved so far?
Many. I will celebrate my 10 years in the fashion industry on March 20. This is to celebrate my best customers, partners, friends, workers and how far Alyn Rosy has come in this industry.
How are you going to celebrate?
Through a showcase of my world’s greatest couture fashion clothes.
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up…?
I used to pray for a new day and check on my phone before, but now it’s associated with motherly or wifely duties.
What is the first thing you do when you arrive at work…?
I check my daily orders to fulfill, then check my email and calendar for upcoming events and check holidays to schedule my showcases.
Your fondest childhood memory…
I was afraid of my shadow because I was told it could slap me.
Who was your first best friend?
My father. I can’t even explain the kind of relationship we had.
How was your first kiss?
I was in Senior Four if I remember correctly, but I was naive about the whole experience.
The first book you read was…?
Gulliver’s Journey by Jonathan Swift. A parody of the then popular travelogue combining adventure and wild satire, poking fun at English customs and the politics of the time.
Your first job was…
I was a photo editor and photographer at Photoshop on Kampala Road.
The first salary was…
Shs300,000.
What did you do with your money?
I wasn’t fully paid and that didn’t bother me because I loved what I did and thought being there would bring me various networks.
What did you use your salary for?
I used to save what little I had to save enough to buy a laptop worth Shs 1.1 million at that time and felt like I had wings.
I had bought it to help me with my course units at university but someone stole it.
Actual job…
I run Alyn Rosy Couture, a fashion house that creates great clothing for men and women.
What do you like about your job?
I do it out of passion. It gives me peace and I love it. I do something that gives me and my clients satisfaction.
Most memorable experience…
The day my dad walked me down the aisle. It was like a dream come true.
The biggest regret is…?
I still regret not having met my husband Nis Denis earlier in my career. But I’m sure God’s timing is perfect.
