Holiday and Christmas 2021 events in Athens, Georgia area

The big comeback of the annual Downtown Lights Parade will mark the official start of the holiday season in Athens, with craft fairs, concerts and activities scheduled throughout the city until the end of 2021.

Here are some of the things you and your family can do in town in December.

December 2

Athens City Center Parade of Lights: This year’s theme is “A Superhero Party”. Free entry.

Christmas Wreath Workshop at the Athens Visitor Center: Led by florist Maggie Hayden. $ 65 with all materials provided; RSVP only.

Public skating at the Classic Center: Skate rental and 75 minutes on the indoor skating rink for $ 15 per person. Until January 9.

3-5 and 10-12 Dec.

Deck the Hollow at Bear Hollow Zoo: Holiday-themed light-lit night tours cost $ 5 for residents of Athens-Clarke County and $ 7.50 for non-residents.

December 4

Holiday Market at the Flicker Theater & Bar: pop-up outdoor market with local vendors. Free entry.

Holiday Market at West Broad Farmers Market: The Handicraft Market and Craft Fair help support artists in Athens and the Athens area. Free entry.

Open House at Lyndon House Arts Center: Holiday shopping will be available at Deck the Walls featuring artwork by local artists. Free entry.

Toddlers in the kitchen at the East Athens Community Center: Bring your little elves to help Mrs. Portia bake gingerbread cookies and “Grinch Punch”. $ 4 for residents of Athens and $ 6 for non-residents.

4-5 Dec.

Heirloom Holiday Market at Heirloom Café and Fresh Market: brunch and shopping with different vendors every day. Free entry.

Holiday pottery sale at Southern Star Studio: annual sale and open house in partnership with Marmalade Pottery. Free entry.

December 6

Athens Choral Society at the UGA Performing Arts Center: “A Baroque Christmas” with music by Vivaldi, Bach, Corelli and Handel. Free entry.

December 6-13

Irish Christmas in America at the Classic Center: The performance includes instrumental music and ‘old school’ Irish dancing. Tickets range from $ 27 to $ 34.

December 7-8

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis at UGA Performing Arts Center: big band versions of holiday classics. Tickets range from $ 59 to $ 89.

December 8

Gingerbread Workshop in Lay Park: Build and design your own gingerbread house. The charge of $ 10 per house includes all materials provided.

9-10 Dec.

Athens Holiday Market at Big City Bread: food, live music, and handmade art by local artisans. Free entry.

December 10

Pottery Sale at Normaltown Pottery: Pottery and ceramics by local artists Juana Gnecco and Nancy Green. Free entry.

Family Day at the Georgia Museum of Art: Lobby Photography Demonstration and Free Fabergé-Inspired Take-Out Art Kit. Free entry.

18-19 Dec

The Nutcracker at the Classical Center: Tchaikovsky’s classic performed by the State Ballet Theater of Ukraine. Tickets range from $ 16 to $ 42.
