Governor Tom Wolf today announced $800,000 in public funding for four Veterans Employment Program (VEP) workforce development projects, helping put veterans in contact with employment opportunities and employment supports in Pennsylvania counties with high veteran unemployment rates.
“Each of Pennsylvania’s veterans has made significant sacrifices in service to our nation,” Governor Wolf said. “For this reason, we owe them all the opportunities we can provide to facilitate their transition to a civilian career. This funding will allow community organizations to help our veterans find meaningful jobs and support their families.
Department of Labor and Industry (L&I) Secretary Jennifer Berrier said employers could also benefit from the funding announced today.
“Pennsylvania employers need skilled workers to help their businesses grow and thrive, and as the economy continues to rebound from the pandemic, veterans will play a vital role in filling the gaps in our workforce. work,” Berrier said. “The Veterans Employment Program will provide employment opportunities for our most honorable citizens and provide more comprehensive services to remove barriers to employment and improve their employment outcomes.
The grants were awarded through L&I using the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) partnership and re-employment funds.
“Pennsylvania is home to nearly 800,000 veterans, the fourth largest veteran population in the nation. It is important that we do everything we can to ensure their successful transition from military to civilian life,” said Maj. Gen. Mark Schindler, Adjutant General of Pennsylvania and head of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA ). “Workforce development opportunities offered through the Veterans Employment Program help veterans find meaningful employment.”
The following four projects were funded at 100% of their requested amount:
Educational Data Systems Inc. $200,000 – DELAWARE COUNTY
Veteran Career Accelerator Program (VCAP)
Educational Data Systems Inc. (EDSI) will provide multi-week, industry-specific Career Accelerator Programs (CAPs) for 30 veterans. They will provide at least one CAP in each of the following sectors: IT, healthcare, construction/skilled trades and customer service. CAPs will include soft skills, input from local employers, and a capstone project, followed by job placement assistance. Ten additional veterans will receive comprehensive career coaching.
NuPaths, LLC. $199,998 – BEAVER, DELAWARE, FAYETTE COUNTIES
NuPaths for Veterans
NuPaths will train 24 veterans living in the proposed counties for entry-level jobs for Network Technician and Computer Security Analyst roles. The programs will be in an accessible distance learning format and provide technical training, industry certifications, and the job search and preparation skills needed to begin a full-time IT apprenticeship or job.
Westmoreland Fayette Inc. Private Industry Council $193,034.50 – FAYETTE COUNTY
PIC Veterans Employment Program
The Private Industry Council will serve Fayette County and help 36 veterans overcome barriers to employment by supplementing existing programs, helping veterans transition to civilian employment, and providing opportunities for earn well above Fayette County’s local median income.
Lackawanna County Workforce Development Board $192,332 – LACKAWANNA COUNTY
A helping hand to help veterans of Lackawanna County
The Lackawanna County Workforce Development Board designed this project to augment existing services for veterans in Lackawanna County through the provision of outreach, case management and assistance in acquiring a job. Through one-on-one interaction, barriers will be overcome and removed to allow access to vocational training, on-the-job training and/or placement in unsubsidized employment to support the family.
This VEP will operate from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023.
