Drekker Brewing Hits ‘Skol’ Targets As Steel Rises To $ 20 Million On Top Of Brewhalla

Walls and structural steel are increasing with the company’s $ 20 million Brewhalla expansion, so there is plenty to do for ‘Skol’ as the project hits its schedule targets, Mark said. Bjornstad, co-founder and chairman of Drekker.

If the schedule holds, Bjornstad said the addition on the west side of 1666 1st Ave. N. – with its hotel, apartments, event center and 22,000 square foot market – should be ready to open in fall 2022.

A 100,000 square foot extension to Brewhalla is under construction on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, west of Drekker Brewing Co. in Fargo. The building will include an event center, hotel, apartments and a 22,000 square foot market. Michael Vosburg / Forum Photo Editor

Once all the steel in the 100,000-square-foot building is raised, the rest of the concrete walls will follow and the building envelope is expected to be closed by October or November, leaving the craftsmen to winter to carry out the work. interiors sheltered from the cold.

“It was a big boost for us. When we started this spring, we were working on this deadline for the building ceiling, so that we could work very easily all winter, ”Bjornstad said on Wednesday September 15th.

“Right now we’ve been on schedule and everything is going well. It looks like we should have the building finished by July or August next summer, ”Bjornstad said. “If we can achieve that, it means we can probably reopen in fall 22.”

Between the building’s completion and opening, Bjornstad said “we’ll have a ton of custom artwork to install” and other “really cool projects” to make the hotel, the market and the event center.

Bjornstad said some of the craft brewery fans were initially confused as to the location of the project in relation to the Brewhalla.

Now that the walls are erected, interest has increased, as travelers in the First Avenue corridor can see the project quickly taking shape. Beer lovers outside the city also plan their pilgrimages.

“Now people are starting to get a sense of what we were really talking about,” Bjornstad said. “They love it. Everyone is excited. We get tons of requests (like, “When will it be open?” And how cool it is.

Concerns about construction debris buried at the site have been proven to be valid, as a lot of concrete and steel from what is believed to be the old central high school has been dug up.

But that wasn’t the only part of the past waiting to be unearthed.

“There was a bit more (debris) of old railway buildings. We knew there had been a partial rotunda there. And we didn’t know what was left. There were some important foundations left from that basement and some kind of old wooden retaining wall that we found that we dug, ”said Bjornstad.

“It was processed within the timeframe we needed. … (Fortunately) We knew there was something out there, so we were ready to face it. It was probably what we expected. It was a big pile, ”Bjornstad said with a chuckle.

The project, a joint venture between Drekker Brewing and MPA Investments, was first made public in December 2020.

The addition, which is part of The Railyard development just west of downtown, will include a 24-bedroom hotel, 18 one- and two-bedroom apartments, an events venue with two rooms for weddings and corporate events; and the market to house food vendors and shops.

Bjornstad said there is room for a few more market partners. He added that Drekker will start announcing its market partners in late September or October.
